The short version

This is a personal site for reading a story. It collects the minimum needed to let you read, comment, and (if you ask for it) get an email when a chapter goes up. There are no analytics or advertising trackers, and nothing about you is sold or shared with anyone.

What this site stores

• Accounts. An account is needed to comment and for nothing else; you can read the whole site without one. If you create one, we store your username, a salted cryptographic hash of your password (never the password itself), and, if you upload one, your profile picture. No email address is required for an account.
• Comments. Comments are public and stored with the account that posted them. Posting one requires an account; reading does not. Comments do not permanently record your IP address; a short-lived in-memory rate limit sees it for a few minutes and forgets it. Comments left before accounts were required keep the display name typed at the time, or "Anonymous".
• Chapter notifications (optional). If you subscribe, we store your email address and nothing else. Subscriptions are double opt-in: nothing is sent until you click the confirmation link. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing deletes your address immediately and entirely. The address is used only to send chapter notices; it is never sold, shared, or used for anything else.
• Availability polls. If you answer a poll at Pick a Day, we store the name you typed, your availability, and the optional note. Everyone holding that poll's link can see all three, which is the whole point of the poll. Nothing else is recorded: no email, no account, no address. The host can delete any answer, and deleting a poll deletes every answer in it.
• World History progress. Anyone with its link can read World History and take its quizzes without an account, and nothing is kept about them. If you are signed in, we keep with your account the chapters you have read, your quiz answers and scores, the review schedule made from them, and the chapter you were last reading, so you can carry on from any device. Deleting your account deletes all of it. Its pictures come from Wikimedia Commons through this site's server, so your browser never contacts Wikimedia.
• Shared session pages. Now and then I share the transcript of one of our game nights with the people who played in it, by a private link, so they can write that night's story together. If you take a part there, we store the name you picked next to it, and everyone holding that link can see it. Nothing else is recorded: no email, no account, no cookie. Your browser remembers the name you picked so you don't have to pick it again. Taking the page down deletes all of it.
• Server logs. Like nearly every web server, basic request logs (addresses and URLs) may exist temporarily to keep the site running and deal with abuse.

Cookies

Essential cookies only: a login session (only if you log in), a security token that protects forms from forgery, and, if you answer an availability poll, a token that remembers which answer is yours so you can come back and change it. If you switch to dark with the sun and moon switch at the top of a page, one more cookie remembers that for a year. It holds the word "dark" and nothing else, and switching back to light deletes it. There are no advertising, analytics, or third-party cookies, which is why there is no cookie banner.

Who can see what

Comments, usernames, and profile pictures are public. Everything else (password hashes, session records, subscriber emails) is private and stays on this site's server. No data is shared with third parties except the infrastructure the site physically runs on, including the mail service that delivers notification emails.

Deleting your things

An answer to an availability poll can be changed or emptied from the private link you were given after submitting, and the poll's host can delete it outright. You can delete your own comments from any chapter page, and delete your entire account from the account page. Deletion removes your profile immediately and detaches your comments, which become anonymous. Unsubscribing from emails deletes your address on the spot. If anything is left behind that you want gone, contact us and it will be removed: contact@calicorogues.com.

Your rights

Wherever you live (this includes California residents under the CCPA/CPRA and EU residents under the GDPR): we collect only what is listed above, for the purposes listed above; we do not sell or share personal information; and you can see, correct, or delete your information by using the tools on the site or by emailing the contact address. We will never discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

Age

Accounts, comments, and email subscriptions are for people 13 or older. If you believe a younger child has posted personal information here, contact us and it will be deleted.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Meaningful changes will be noted on the site.
